Node

device that is connected to a network. Devices like computers and printers.

Client

requests and uses the resources available from other nodes. It is like a microcomputer.

Server

a node that shares resources with other nodes. Specialized in performing certain tasks. Depending on the specific task, it may be called application server, communication server, database server, and so forth.

Hub

the center or central node for other nodes. This device can be a server or simply a connection point for from other nodes.

Host computer

a large centralized computer, usually a minicomputer or a mainframe.

Network interface cards

expansion cards located at the system unit that connects computer to a network. Can be referred to as a LAN adapter.

Network administrator

a computer specialist responsible for efficient network operations and implemention of new networks and such.

Network operating system (NOS)

control and coordinates the activities of all computers and devices of the network. These activities includes electronic communication and the sharing of information and resources.
